Adaptive Physical Education Services (APE)

In-Person and Virtual Adaptive Physical Education

EMH Sports USA strives to be responsive to the special needs of the homeschooled community. Appropriate programs are designed and implemented after consultation with the family and/or homeschool. EMH applies the same concept of physical, social, and emotional development to our special needs students.

EMH has been an Adaptive Physical Education provider for over 10 years.  As a Non Public Agency (NPA) by the California Department of Education, we are certified to provide individualized services to both the public and the private school sectors. We partner with schools and families to assess and devlop individualized learning goals for each student one-on-one or integrated into our group PE classes.

Additionally, EMH now is able to offer virtual accommodations for many of our students throughout the United States. While our goal is to offer on-site instruction whenever possible, there are instances where the amount of time required weekly or monthly or distance to the service location makes it difficult to have an instructor physically meet with a student. Virtual services will allow students to be accommodated within their homes or comfort zones. The scheduling of services will not differ from the standards based on the Individualize Education Plan. After review of the student’s IEP goals, we will let the parent know what equipment will be necessary, as well as log in information and scheduling services with our virtual APE instructor.

Certifications

EMH Sports USA is certified by the California Department of Education as a non-public agency (NPA) and through the Adaptive Physical Education National Standards (APENS).

NPA Certification

The State of California requires that all agencies, private and public, wishing to contract with a public school district and charter school receive approval and certification by the state for the programs they provide.  Public schools are required to provide a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to special education students.  If a student’s special education needs cannot be met within the student’s district, the district may contract with an approved Non-Public Agency (NPA), such as EMH, for special education and related services.

EMH Sports has been approved and certified to work one-on-one with students requiring adaptive physical education services. By approving EMH with the NPA credential, the state certifies that we are meeting high standards in both our programs and our staff.

EMH Sports looks forward to working with public school districts and charter schools to help develop and implement services given through the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).

APENS Certification

EMH provides credentialed instruction through the Adaptive Physical Education National Standards (APENS). This certification means that students are benefiting from a program on a national level that maintains an updated standard and regularly certifies that its members are current in their understanding and practice of those skills and knowledge. Students who fall under this category receive instruction conducted on a 1:1 basis.

APEC Certification

EMH Sports has developed the “Adaptive Physical Education Certification Program” (APEC) which was established for instructors to work with special needs students. All EMH APE instructors are required to have degrees or course work in education, kinesiology, physical therapy, or an extensive coaching background to qualify for this program. The instructor works closely with the APE Manager who sets the goals for each student. All instructors are live-scanned, have a negative TB test, and are CPR/First Aid certified.
