Special Needs Students

While EMH is a fully inclusive PE program that is open to students with special needs, the child must be able to function in the class without hampering instruction or requiring assistance from the PE instructor. If directed by an individualized education program (IEP), EMH can provide one of our Adapted Physical Education instructors for one-on-one lessons or have the instructor assigned to shadow the student during a regular PE class. APE services must be approved through the child's homeschool charter and contracted with us before this service can be provided.

In-Person and Virtual Adapted Physical Education

EMH Sports USA strives to be responsive to the special needs of the homeschooled community. Appropriate programs are designed and implemented after consultation with the family and/or homeschool. EMH applies the same concept of physical, social, and emotional development to our special needs students.

EMH has been an Adapted Physical Education provider for over 10 years.  As a Non Public Agency (NPA) by the California Department of Education, we are certified to provide individualized services to both the public and the private school sectors. We partner with schools and families to assess and develop individualized learning goals for each student one-on-one or integrated into our group PE classes.

Additionally, EMH now is able to offer virtual accommodations for many of our students throughout the United States. While our goal is to offer on-site instruction whenever possible, there are instances where the amount of time required weekly or monthly or distance to the service location makes it difficult to have an instructor physically meet with a student. Virtual services will allow students to be accommodated within their homes or comfort zones. The scheduling of services will not differ from the standards based on the Individualize Education Plan. After review of the student’s IEP goals, we will let the parent know what equipment will be necessary, as well as log in information and scheduling services with our virtual APE instructor.

Certifications

EMH Sports USA is certified by the California Department of Education as a non-public agency (NPA) and through the Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS).

NPA Certification

The State of California requires that all agencies, private and public, wishing to contract with a public school district and charter school receive approval and certification by the state for the programs they provide.  Public schools are required to provide a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to special education students.  If a student’s special education needs cannot be met within the student’s district, the district may contract with an approved Non-Public Agency (NPA), such as EMH, for special education and related services.

EMH Sports has been approved and certified to work one-on-one with students requiring adapted physical education services. By approving EMH with the NPA credential, the state certifies that we are meeting high standards in both our programs and our staff.

EMH Sports looks forward to working with public school districts and charter schools to help develop and implement services given through the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).

APEC Certification

EMH Sports has developed the “Adapted Physical Education Certification Program” (APEC) which was established for instructor/aides to work with special needs students. All EMH APE instructors are required to have degrees or course work in education, kinesiology, physical therapy, or an extensive coaching background to qualify for this program. The instructor works closely with the APE Manager who sets the goals for each student. All instructors are live-scanned, have a negative TB test, and are CPR/First Aid certified.

NEW: EMH Sports Specialty Designed PE Classes

EMH Sports USA has offered physical education classes to thousands of students since its inception in 2004, and while our program is designed to create an inclusive environment for all students, there are situations where some students with disabilities are unable to fully participate. We are excited to announce our new Specialty Designed PE classes starting in the Fall of 2018 in select cities.

This new program will be conducted by EMH inhouse-certified APE teachers who will instruct weekly classes for students with special needs in a PE setting at local parks. The lesson plans are carefully selected to enhance physical development and to help these children enjoy physical activity, to be around their peers, and to learn how to be active throughout their lifetime.

While this program is designed to foster regular physical education, it does not replace the need for any students with an Individual Education Program (IEP). The student’s charter school will still be responsible for the IEP services or make arrangements for those services to be provided through other public or private institutions.

In addition to our children's services, our Adult APE Programs are designed to accommodate participants eighteen years and older. Programs specifically designed for the mature members of the community provide physical activities that foster lifelong healthy lifestyles.
