Coach Lesson Plan
*Don’t spend too much time on drills as they need to play for at least 20-30 minutes.
Warm up – Have your group to run around the court, then stretch, take roll.
Put the group into a straight line (you can use lines of the court) or a circle for demonstration purposes. Ask that they do not dribble while you are discussing techniques and that they must wait until you blow the whistle.
Goals for Session 2 - basic pivoting, passing, and layups.
Skill Development:
Older groups: finger taps, around the waist, around the head, around the legs. Modify for younger groups. Have them dribble with their right hand and then left for a few minutes before going to the drills. If you do not have enough balls, you can have them dribble up and down the court in groups.
1. Review pivoting.
2. Passing – Show them each pass before allowing them to do it - overhead, bounce, chest pass. Make sure that you show them how to hold the fingers and that they need to call out “ball”. Pair them up across from one another into two lines – only one needs a ball. Spend a few minutes on each. No more than 10 minutes. The younger groups - coach may have to do the passes with each student.
3. Layups – Have them walk up and down the court with proper leg movement - right then left - once near the basket, show where to aim the ball using the square on the backboard. Make sure you discuss proper leg and arm movement. Put into two lines and have the try to do a layup (one try) and then they get into the opposite line.
Young Groups have them stand to right of the rim and shoot. Then move them to the left portion of the rim. No more than 10 minutes.
4. Game - If the group is too large - bring them up in teams for a couple minutes each and then sub in subsequent teams. NO STEALING. Other variations that can be used are: playing all the girls together and then boys at 5 minute games each. Don’t play 15-20 students at one time, do a minute or two, then sub the groups. Younger group - put your littlest ones on a team.
