Coach Lesson Plan

*Don’t spend too much time on drills as they need to play for at least 20-30 minutes. 


Warm-up –  Have your group run around the court, then stretch, take roll. 


Put the group into a straight line (you can use lines of the court) or a circle for demonstration purposes. Ask that they do not dribble while you are discussing techniques and that they must wait until you blow the whistle. 


Goals for Session 3 - Defense, close outs. 


Skill Development: 

Older groups: finger taps, around the waist, around the head, around the legs. Modify for younger groups. 


1. Defense – Explain why it is important. Show proper stance – L shape with one foot pointing in the direction you are going. Bend knees - one arm down other up. Arm down blocks the dribble – hand up blocks the pass. Take long steps without crossing feet. Show them how to steal the ball, tapping under and not over ball. Explain fouling, and man-on-man defense. 


2. Close out step - when a person is shooting and you don’t want to get a foul you do this move. Stutter forward hands up. 

    

3. Pair them up and let them practice taking the ball from one another. 

    

4. Game. Use Man-to-man defense. Pair them up with someone to guard so that everyone is not running after the ball. They need to pass the ball twice before shooting. Use the same grouping variations as used in previous sessions
