Coach Lesson Plan
Warm up – have your group run to a location and afterwards have them stretch, take roll.
Goal for skill development Lesson 3: Baton and standing long jump.
Divide the class into two groups: A (5-12th), B (K-4th) for 30 minute segments then switch
Skill Development:
Baton Group A - Stretch only!! There is no time for the warm up drills as it will take 30 minutes for the students to learn this technique. Introduce the baton or “stick”. Tell them they are not eyepieces, horns, or a weapon. We don’t want them clanging them together as they will dent.
We will use the right hand to pass off and receive the baton in our PE class to keep the confusion of switching hands. Explain that the hand that accepts the baton should be open, arm extended above the waist, elbow facing up. Tell them not to jab the baton into the hand of the receiver (just lay it in their hand). Tell them that it is the passer’s job to make sure that the baton gets into the receiver’s hand. They must say “stick” which will let the receiver know to put their arm/hand out to accept. 1. Drill: Put into groups of 4 or more in single file lines. Give the baton to the person at the back of the line. Have them pump their arms like they are running. On your whistle blow, they will say “stick” and hand it to the person in front of them. (The receiver must only put their hand out when they hear the command, “stick”). The group will only pass the stick forward on the whistle blow. When the baton gets to the person in the front of the line, that person will run to the back of the line and it starts all over on the blowing of the coach’s whistle. For the older groups only, once they have it down correctly, they can jog down the field passing the baton throughout the line. Video component
2. Drill: Set up a field of lanes using cones (4 cones for stations - 5th cone make up the finish line). Keep about 10 feet between stations and the field can be set for about 20 meters apart. Put students on teams and have them practice passing the baton in a mock relay race. (Make sure that you have the students stand on the same side of the cones and the person with the baton). If you have an odd number of lanes, you can add an extra station.
Group B - Standing Long Jump
1. Show the technique, pumping arms and picking out a spot to jump to. Have the students line up in row, shoulder to shoulder, and have them jump several times.
2. Drill: Place a tape measure on the ground on a flat surface. Place flat discs along the sides of the tape measure. Take two flat discs for the starting point. Put the group into a single fine line and have them jump. Measure, and have them get into the back of the line. If you have a large group, you can have two jumping at the same time on each side of the tape. Do this until the end of the class. Video component
